Shawn and I were discussing my packing for Seattle. One evening, two full days, one early morning. Not a lot to pack, right? Except that 1. It'll be pretty dang cold and probably raining and/or windy, 2. We'll be biking everywhere and 3. I insist on always being cute, dammit! Especially when it's just Shawn and me in a different city. I don't care what anyone else thinks of me but Shawn and maybe Nickey, who we plan to visit. So I want to wear what makes me feel the best. Especially since the trip is for my birthday.
I have three pairs now of O Woolies socks in grey, purple, and dark green. In addition, I still have a pair of ridiculously tall dark red thick thigh-highs from American Apparel (those are acrylic but still pretty warm). I have one pair of brown wool tights and have already proven myself capable of wearing them for days on end--wool is fairly odor-resistant.
So skirts should be fine, except I don't have enough of them, I think. Strange but true. Especially since my tastes in skirts have changed. Meh. I hardly wear my longer skirts any more, and my shorter ones just aren't full enough. MOAR FABRIC. I really need to learn to sew decently, as the kind of skirt I like just isn't in thrift stores.
I dunno. Mebbe I'll ride up to Red Light and Buffalo Exchange tomorrow. Hope springs eternal.
Goddammit, just started poking around the American Apparel website. They have a ton of skirts that I want, most between $30 and $40. Skirt one Skirt two Skirt three (hm, though, that one is awfully short) Skirt four Skirt five

Date: 2009-11-05 02:45 pm (UTC)So, I'd advise you to go for the short skirts, at the cost of wearing something extra under them.
And take pictures! :-)

Date: 2009-11-05 05:11 pm (UTC)Shorts do work well under really short stuff though, you're right! I've worn them that way before.

Date: 2009-11-05 05:08 pm (UTC)What I really want is a bunch of almost-knee length, gathered or loosely pleated (i.e. the pleats are sewn in but not pressed) skirts with waistbands, that are full enough to have that lolita-skirt shape. So the fabric would be woven, and solid-colored or patterned with something classy and/or cute.
On Hawthorne up by Buffalo Exchange and Red Light (Red Light is so dangerous for me because they always have Gunne Sax dresses) there's a store now that sells only brand-name stuff...they might have some American Apparel, or stuff that resembles it.

Date: 2009-11-05 08:16 pm (UTC)It is convenient, though, that most lolita skirts are panel skirts--the skirt part is just a long-ass rectangle as opposed to flared, in order to get the cupcake/bell shape. And that shape of skirt can look nice even without a huge petticoat. Although I do need to make a nice cotton "everyday" petticoat (in addition to a nice poofy lolita petti), as mine wore out. I miss having one that just makes my skirts look a little nicer.

Date: 2009-11-06 03:04 am (UTC)I buy skirts like what you're describing literally all the time, though I rarely see them in the smallest sizes. Prolly cuz I'm buying grandma skirts. I like to buy petite vintage skirts because they are the perfect non-frumpy length on my decidedly non-petite self.
I am breaking up with pants. They never ever fit just right even if I *can* find them thrifting, which I can't. Skirts, on the other hand, flow like manna from heaven, and I can wear a thrajillion different sizes.

OMG--now that I have more warm tights/socks I wear skirts biking more often even when it's cold. We'll see if I stick it out when it's 30-something and raining though. :^)
