I saw a young buck this morning. Two-point antlers. I got off the max at Beaverton Creek, and he was nibbling on the grass, not twenty feet from where cars drop people off. He looked up at me a few times but seemed to figure I was harmless. I would have stayed and watched him longer, but I didn't want to be too late to work. I worried about him, though--he had to cross max tracks (during morning rush hour) to get back into the trees, and there were a lot of busy streets nearby.

I've been seeing a lot more deer than usual lately. Is it just the time of year? There's not any hunting that close by, so they don't seem to have any fear of people.

There's probably not really a snowball's chance in hell of me getting to Tyson's to even start looking for a white button-down shirt and my tie. [livejournal.com profile] ruby_wings is going as an "emo" Ravenclaw, so I think I'm going to go to Hot Topic and buy a girly-cut Slytherin tshirt, and wear it with my black skirt from last weekend, fishnets, and my docs. I'll be a goth Slytherin! ....sorta. *lol*

I think for the next movie (and the last book), I might attempt to go all-out accurate, with a robe and all.

I've been seeing a lot of herons and crows recently, myself.

It's that time of year. The young males ones are getting booted from the herd of does. Late october to early december is their mating period so males become a lot more visible due to trying to get a territory. It is not a coincience that this is hunting season for males. Doe season is late august before they become pregnant.

If you can find some of the fuzz from his antlers it is powerful stuff for spellwork. Antlers come in hairy, and the fuzz is rubbed off on branches, which looks like they are sharpening their antlers, but really its more akin to a snake shedding their skin.

Oh and dawn and dusk are the times you are most likely to see them. They forage primarily at night, so early morning and early evening they are moving around from open spaces to wooded areas or back.

If I remember correctly the deer was one of the possible totem animals I picked for you for the summer campout, yes?

Yup, it was. :-) The other deer I saw were two does, one looked younger than the other, in the nearby nature park. They were wary of me but not too afraid...the buck this morning kept an eye on me but otherwise didn't care. It was awfully tempting to try to get closer.

The problem with them being around people is that they loose their natural fear reactions. And people become used to seeing them and begin to think of them as domesticated. (Not you necessarily, just a sweeping generalization.) Just keep in mind that while they appear calm and docile they are wild animals, and will kick the crap out of you, or stab you with those antlers if you corner them.

Ferile cats look like fluffy but will resist with every muscle, claw and tooth, being captured and petted. Deer are the same only 100 lbs instead of 5.

That's what I figured. Nah, I don't want to threaten something that's about my size or larger that I can't reason with. *lol*

I have to admit, if I could figure out a way to get a pair of real deer antlers without killing a deer (or someone else killing one!), I'd love to make a headdress-kinda-thing for the Horned God.

Don't they break off their antlers every year and grow a new pair? I think I heard that somewhere, but I've never just seen an antler on the ground anywhere.

If I can find some fuzz, I'll definitely grab it. What is it used for in spellwork?

They shed their antlers every year between January and March. They grow back in between April and May. Each time they grow back in they get a new fork. So a 2 point is (most likly) 2 years old. Which makes a whole lot of sense because that's sexual maturity for them also. The one you saw didn't have enough experience to know to get back to the trees before the commuters started showing up. In oregon they have to have 3 points before they are legal for hunters.

You've probably seen antlers and just not recognized them. Each antler breaks off at the head so it looks a lot like a tree branch laying on the ground. They don't look like a "rack" which has been preserved and hung on the wall as some bizarre trophy. I've only ever seen one and I only saw it because of the dogs. We were taking a hike and I found marty came trotting down the hill with one which must have recently been shed because it was uhhh .... natural.

I would use the fuzz for times when I wanted to find an alternative path to a goal. (Deer are phenominal at finding a hidden path somewhere.) Or if I wanted to heighten my sensitivity (they have very good eyesight, and those huge ears, but sense most danger with their nose). There's probably more but that's what first came to mind.

Deer energy isn't one I've tried working with much, they're too flighty for my group. And I mean that in the most non-judgemental way possible. Turtle and badger are just slow and methodical, they either carry their homes with them, or burrow in. This whole migration thing annoys them. :)

I'm kinda proud that I have a lot of deer energy. I like deer!

Gathering anything isn't allowed at the nature park though. Grrr. No one would notice if I took fuzz, but carrying out a random antler might get noticed. *lol*

I thought about shooing him, but then he's running towards the tracks or the road, which would defeat the point.

I hope I see him again.
