So...uh...I went to the bead store earlier to buy alphabet beads and findings to make stitch markers (for sock knitting) out of them. I ended up using blank earrings and put the alphabet beads on them, and they're not perfect, but they're cheap and they'll work.
(Although if anyone cares to, a pretty set like
these would be nice to have....)
While at the bead store, some glass beads caught my eye. Now I suck at jewelry design, but I've stared down enough of the awesome stuff
some of my
friends make to get the general gist of how some of it is made.
So I wrestled with a couple of glass beads and tiny pliers and made a pair of earrings:

Sorry for the crappy cell phone shot--I loaned Shawn G my camera for his trip.
They're not perfect--I can see all their flaws. But for a first time, and just a couple of minutes, not bad! I now have perfectly okay earrings for a few dollars. I might do this more often, as long as I keep to really simple stuff.
And to my friends I've linked who make excellent jewelry: I do not have the eye, or the patience, to make anything worth selling, so no worries.
