Do you see what that is? It's a dedicated cycletrack. It's like a bike lane, except it's marked so you're less likely to get doored. There are special green boxes to help you make left turns (the stretch of road this is on doesn't have any right turns). More information here.

I think it's beautiful. I want to ride it.

This is for only a few blocks at PSU. It's an experiment at this point.

The towns in Europe etc. with huge percentages of people on bicycles, generally have lots of these (or some variation thereof) on traffic-heavy roads.

Vehicular cyclists are of course all pissed off (NEWS FLASH: not every cyclist is comfortable riding with traffic, deal with it). And so are ignorant car-drivers commenting on various news sites (for the last effing time, cyclists DO pay for the roads). Gaaah!

In Montreal, they have cycle-tracks with an actual raised curb between the car lane and the bike lane - it's great!

Quebec also has La Route Verte, which allows you to bike all over the province, and they give out maps, shops can be listed as bike-friendly for inclusion on the maps/brochures, and there is consistent signage through the whole thing! I want to go up there and ride it some time.

I'm not opposed to it, but I sure do like riding in traffic :D

Seconded. I don't mind riding in traffic; in fact, I kinda like it. But I can't imagine a lane like that pissing me off.

Not sure how it would work with bus traffic, tho'. Do bus riders just get dropped off next to the parked cars?

I don't remember. The bikeportland article has more information.

I do too, sometimes. But I didn't feel comfortable doing it until I'd been riding a while. If the goal is to increase the number of people on bicycles, things like cycletracks are awesome.

I'm glad they put them in, but some warning would have been nice. We went to PSU on Monday and they were just there. Eric wasn't sure how to park until I told him.

Yeah, the public education is a tad lacking...I hear stories of cars driving down the bike lane or attempting to park in it. The bike boxes got far more fanfare.
