Also, I have to thank Whedon for having Kaylee Frye bring back the parasol.
I was at the yearly pagan campout (The one where Daks and I met) and there were TONS of Japanese parasols. They're one of the things that I wished never died out.
I bought this one in the summer of 2006, and I can't remember what inspired me to buy it. I just remember that I went downtown one day, to Little Finnegan's (which I think closed, boooo) with the specific purpose of buying a parasol.
I think it may have have been because they're shadier than a huge straw hat and prettier, too. I think I paid around $6 for it.
It's Chinese. Jarrod's brother in law is from China and says the stuff printed on it is poetry. It's cunning to me, how it's put together: bits of bamboo, paper, glue, and string. That's it!
(Parasols are popular among lolitas too, but usually they're fabric and lace.)
Now that I think about it: parasols are also quite flirtatious, really. Because at the same time that I'm drawing attention to myself--they're big, not common these days, and people notice them--they can only see me if I want to be seen, depending on the angle of the sun and where I'm standing. So someone coming up to me might see my parasol but not my face, until they get to the other side of me or something.
Women carrying parasols could be said to be both making a spectacle, and shyly hiding.
Indoors, the same could be said for hand fans. Yes, they're useful when one lacks electric fans or a/c, but women have been flirting with hand fans for many centuries!
