I need to stop reading the idiotic commentary to news sites. Especially where cyclists are concerned.

But, in case there's anyone on my friends list who is confused on the following:

I read the argument online all the damn time about how "cyclists don't pay their fair share." Bullshit. The incredible majority of funding for roads comes from property and income taxes. Gas taxes and fees on car ownership hardly pay a dang thing. Anything you pay to the DMV, mostly funds the DMV.

Not to mention that bikes take up way less space on the roads, and put almost zero wear and tear on them. They also don't put any pollution into the air.

Someone did the math once, and because cyclists still pay taxes but don't put any wear and tear on the roads, in a lot of ways, someone who doesn't drive is subsidizing cars!

Yeah, that shit pisses me off too. I literally can't read it. I feel like steam comes out of my ears.

With veganism, weirdly, I have an easier time, and maybe that's because I've given people the arguments for so many times that I can almost do it without having to be completely in my mind. I can distance myself from the thing that makes me nuts.

Although I almost did have a meltdown this week over those "escaped" OHSU macaques. I really wanted them to make it, but instead I'm assaulted by television images of a macaque being shot with rubber bullets. Fuckers.

We should hang out some time soon. When I'm not crazy-exhausted. I'm hoping that will happen one of these days!

Oh - I've actually got a cheesy girl movie I wouldn't mind inviting some girls over to watch. It's called "Shag". Almost no one has seen it, and it didn't do well at the box office, but it's one of those awesome coming of age girls on a road trip movies which is actually well written and a guilty pleasure at the same time.

Anyway... I've gotta go to class now. Aw aw!

I was just thinking recently that I needed to call you and make a date to hang out or do something together.

Although if you're available Saturday or Sunday, you might enjoy one of the group rides I'm going on...the Dead Freeways Ride will be interesting--my roommate Donna has attended them before, she's liked them. And I have an extra pair of bunny ears for the Bunny on a Bike Ride. I'm gonna make some sort of muffins, I think. Something with fruit in it.

AFAIK, I'm available Sunday evening. My next week is open until Friday, actually. Let me know.

Oh, AND: The vegan thing makes my ears steam too, but only when people are being jerks about it. People who are honestly ignorant don't bother me nearly as much, because I used to be that ignorant. But the anti-bike people just throw me for a loop. They just...hate us.

Of course, I have the frustration of knowing really gung-ho bike people who are really passionate about slowing global warming...who love bacon and eat meat for every meal. I really think a lot of them just don't have the information on meat and global warming, but places like the shift list are just not good places to talk about it, y'know? I've been engaging individuals as the subject comes up in conversation, and offering to continue the conversations via email etc. And I posted that one list of facts to my facebook...which was completely ignored. ARGH.

I've had coffee, can you tell? Gah! I need to get going. Gotta stop by the bike shop, and then the hostel for Shawn G's bike touring workshop.

Speaking of the hostel, I know you wanted to go to their brunch potluck thingie before. This Sunday won't work because of the Bunny on a Bike Ride, but maybe some other Sunday soon?

getting people to at least not eat as much meat is not a bad thing

I totally agree, I just don't think the Shift list is the place to bring it up.
