The vet's not sure what's wrong with Frodo. Possibly cancer or congestive heart failure, but whatever it is, it's complicated by an overlying infection. So she's taking massive antibiotics and I'm supposed to go back in two weeks.

The lump I thought was a mammary tumor was her spleen. That, her liver, and several other organs, are all swollen up. And she's having to work really hard to breathe, which is part of why she lost so much weight--she doesn't want to stop breathing long enough to chew/swallow.

That's so sad! :(

Did you stick with Dr. Burgess or did you try Linwood?

I still haven't seen Dr. Burgess himself, both times I've been to his office, I've seen one of the other two vets there! But I liked them both a lot. Dr. Ramsell was the one for this past visit, and it was interesting to watch her palpate Frodo's abdomen and identify the organs.

During the whole exam, Frodo kept looking at me, no matter what else was going on, and at one point while on the table she came to me. When I picked her up she got on my shoulder. Sometimes I wonder if my rats are truly fond of me, and it felt good to have her come to me like that.

Well, the spleen the primary infection processing organ, and the liver is the blood filter, so maybe when you get the infection under control the swelling will go down and she'll be fine. And maybe liquid foods would help, especially high fat since that would give her some high but slow burning calories--ie oil of some kind.

I was told to give her baby food, especially something calorie-dense. I've been giving her a canned vegan dog food, but I'm stopping by People's tonight and buying some baby food (they have some that's got veggies and quinoa), to which I plan to add some oil. I might mash some tofu into it too, because she surely needs more protein than usually, and it seems like a good equivalent to the eggs the vet recommended, being a complete protein and all.

*hugs* I hope the antibiotics do the trick and that her breathing gets better real fast. Sorry, sweetie.
