I rode my bike to work yesterday. It wasn't an intentional decision ahead of time, what happened was I got out the door and then remembered I had no bus tickets and no cash. "Dammit!" I said to myself. "I have to ride my bike!"
The tires were underinflated, so going uphill was, uh, interesting.
On the upside though, some local bike group in Portland, on the last Friday of every month, has coffee and tea and munchies on the West side of the Hawthorne bridge, for people walking or biking. It was so wild, a guy had even rigged up hooks on the railing to hang the cups from after they were washed.
I got out of work early so I could finally pick up my adderall Rx at The Portland Clinic. I stopped at REI to reinflate my tires first, and then I remembered how much I actually love to ride my bike.
When I got to my old job, it was actually quite fun to to into medrecs and chat with everyone. Oh, and my Rx had a note on it that said I don't get anymore until I've had an appointment. Well, fuck. I don't have insurance for another five months, and that's assuming they keep me at this job.
Riding home from the max was a blast. iPods make biking more fun, I kept catching myself singing along whenever I had the breath for it. Yes, XTC's Apple Venus album, the first couple of songs anyway, make for excellent bicycle riding. Hell, the second track has a line or two about riding a bicycle.
iPods are a mixed blessing for bikes, though. On the one hand, I was having so much fun it was ridiculous. I'd be riding uphill so hard my lungs hurt and my legs burned, and I wouldn't care at all.
The downside? It's distracting. I totally ran a red light on Hawthorne. And it wasn't one of those times where it's green when I get into the intersection and it turns yellow and red while I'm in it. Nope. I get into the intersection, look up, and then realize it's a red light.
I think it had just turned red though, because the cars coming from the side didn't go until after I'd cleared it. But, shit! I could've ended up dead. Not to mention I just pissed off some drivers who just had their stereotypes about bike-riders reinforced. Oy.
Jarrod and I are going to Newport today. We wanted to leave super-early to make sure we got all available sunlight. Amusingly, I'm up and I've eaten, and he's still in bed. I guess he plans to get up while I'm in the shower.
Woo! Sand! Barking sea lions! I'm taking my camera. And the iPod.
