My search for work has become very frustrating. I was hoping to get a receptionist position in a medical office, but the fact is, I'm unqualified for most of them. Either that, or they have a long list of job requirements that include things like "very, very organized" and I know I just wouldn't be any good at it. I'm starting to think that my medrecs position was a lucky fluke.

So I'm putting it to you guys: what kind of positions do you think I should be applying for? I have two years' experience in medical records (I haven't even seen any open positions for this anywhere), and if you go back three years, I have five years' cashiering experience. I can type fast, but not ten-key (all the data entry jobs I see are ten-key). Other than that, I'm fubared.

What I find funny is that everyone is looking for CNAs, and none of the local schools are offering the CNA program. WTF?

EDIT: Mt. Hood Community College has a CNA program, open to twenty people a term. The classes are at night for five weeks while you do the book stuff and then during the day for five weeks while you get clinical experience.

I keep thinking it would be a good idea to get a CNA and do that for a while, because ten weeks at a community college is cheaper than going through nursing school if I find out I hate it.

Have you considered looking at library work? Some libraries will hire people to shelve books or work the circulation desk based on your qualifications (customer service being a big one).

Oooh, that would so kick ass. And the local library levy just passed, so they have their funding. Excellent idea.

....bah. No positions open that I'm qualified for.

Maybe I'm dumb, but what is a CNA? I'm usually quite good at discerning acronyms, but all I can get is "Certified Nurse Aardvark."

YOu need to get on the OHSU job website and apply for "Patient Access specialist" and "PAS trainee". Also look at "administrative Assistant".

And the only part of the OHSU application I haven't finished is my references. Gaaah. I just need to call my old job and make sure it's okay.

I don't have a lot of the skills they'd prefer, but I have all the requirements.
