Alginate is this cool stuff that goes from purple to pale blue as it becomes solid. It's used to make imprints of teeth. It feels kinda rubbery when it sets, which only takes about a minute.

In a week I get to pick up my biteguard. The dentist I saw agrees with my doctor that I'm lucky that I'm doing something about my TMJ early on--he says if this is the right biteguard for me, and I'm diligent about it, I may not have any more problems with it. Matter of fact, he seemed downright overjoyed that we caught it this early. He also has a policy that once I've paid for one biteguard (admittedly not cheap--$340), and it's not the right kind, I don't have to pay for the others. We'll just keep trying until I get a kind/size/etc. that works.

When he had his fingers in my mouth (I do grind a little, but it's not bad), he said "Hmm, you're not getting enough water....did you go out last night and drink alcohol?" He was smiling and I laughed and told him yes, and I'd had at least a quart of water since then, but apparently that wasn't enough. He asked if I was hungover and said he wouldn't lecture me about getting enough water this time.

That makes him sound like he was flirting, and he wasn't. I think I like this dentist. *lol*

After going to Mirador down the street to get a muffin tin and liners and things like that, I did make cupcakes, with chocolate frosting. I need powdered sugar to make any other frosting though, and People's doesn't have it. Gaaah, I hate going to the New Seasons down the street from us. It's always mobbed and loud. People's is so casual and comfortable in comparison. I've joked with Jarrod and Jen that People's feels like an extension of our house, and one day I'll find myself in line for the register wearing my pj's or only a towel or something.

Anyway, the cupcakes are super-awesome. The more I poke through the deceptively small cookbook, the more yummy things I find--Rum raisin cupcakes! Margarita cupcakes! Woo!

I also made a beet soup. It's fun to cook with beets, because the sink and the cutting board and everything you cook turns purpley-red. Including my hands! But the soup is super-yummy and used up a lot of things we already had. Tomorrow I might make one with red bell peppers and broccoli and use up more of our farmshare. Also, some pumpkin cookies. I made those cookies several times last year, and OMG they're so good. And I can use up the rest of the pumpkin on cupcakes later this week.

Twelve cupcakes per recipe, divided by three people in this house, means we each get four. I think Jarrod's already eaten his share. [livejournal.com profile] jenhowell and I are barely behind...hahaha.

The cookbooks I use the most, are the last of the three Sarah Kramer cookbooks (La Dolce Vegan) and Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra. The beet soup came from the Isa Chandra book.

Yaaay! I'm re-friended!
