Today was a comedy of errors.

I haven't ridden my bike much. Around a parking lot, to New Seasons and back, that's about it.

Before we left, with the intention of going to Laurelhurst park, we inflated my tires a little more. We rode down to the waterfront and went on the Eastbank Esplanade for a bit--it's very pretty! But we didn't get far before we noticed that my tires were losing air. We rode up to Citybikes up on Ankeny, but they were closed for Labor day. So we went to Coventry Cycle on Hawthorne and 20th, and they replaced my innner tubes. The tubes plus labor wasn't terribly expensive and the people there were nice.

We get out of the shop and around the corner before suddenly, the chain seems unconnected to the back wheel. So back we go. Turns out that part of the gear system isn't for the same model of bike. The guy at the shop tweaks it, and off we go again.

We're not far from Laurelhurst, on about 38th and Belmont, when I hear a clatter. I look back, and the back reflector had come off. Also, my back tire is completely flat. Again.

We start walking both bikes back to Coventry. We don't get far before the back tire comes completely off the wheel, making it impossible to even walk it. So I grab [livejournal.com profile] rikell42's bike and start walking it, and he picks up my bike and starts carrying it. Keep in mind, it's a pretty old bike. It weighs a ton. I think at this point we were at 25th and Belmont.

Have I mentioned that it's been hot outside? Because it has been. Poor J. He gets super boyfriend brownie points, or something like that.

Technically, the bike shop is closed by now, but we knocked anyway. I was kinda embarrassed to be there again, but they didn't seem at all annoyed or anything. They were just curious as to what had happened! They put on an entirely new tire, and didn't charge me for labor.

After all that, we were just tired...we rode straight home. We left the house around 1:30. We didn't get home until almost six. Yikes.

Tonight: stir-fry and a movie. Yaaay! And we got a lot of the house clean today, double yay!

You need to learn how to do basic things like change flats and putting on chains, and carry a spare tube. It's easy and may be a real lifesaver (not literally) if you are stuck far away from a bike shop.
Riding or pushing a flat bike can cause tire and rim damage, besides being exhausting.
The gear system is ALWAYS a different model than the bike. The bike maker doesn't make the gear system. Usually Shimano does. There are lots of different models and you probably have mixed parts.

I already know that I need to learn to do basic repairs.

And I probably quoted the repair guy incorrectly. It's all a foreign language to me.

Maybe strega could teach you since she owned a bike shop and all.

Jesus, sounds like the guy you talked to at Coventry was completely clueless.

Changing tubes is pretty easy, and they're only about $4 for a replacement. Maybe we should have a tube-changing party!
