This neighborhood is full of cats. Cats, cats, everywhere.

[livejournal.com profile] rikell42's totalled car is parked in a carport kinda thing. Several of the windows are rolled down.

Now, lots of local kitties like to wander in and out of our yard. But one in particular likes to jump into [livejournal.com profile] rikell42's car and lie on the backseat. We don't mind. Matter of fact, it sure is cute. "Is the cat in the car?" "Naah, not today."

Apparently Portland had the highest number of stray cats per person than anywhere else in the US?
Who takes the time to count this type of thing when they could be helping the cats?

They count them when they are doing feral speutering roundups. In a sense I suppose they are doing something to help the cats. They get a round of shots and checked for any obvious disease or illness, and they get fixed which cuts down on future populations. Ones which are young enough or show enough socialization are collected for potential adoption. Some of the younger healthier ones which are too feral for pets are given to farmers to control rodent populations in graineries (particularly in lower population/higher agricultural areas such as eastern oregon. I transported 25 to la grande a couple years ago). And unfortunately some are re-released as feral. And ones that are too sick or injured are put down, but at least they don't have to suffer until they starve to death.

Live traps were all over the place in spring and fall at the little house I lived in over near strega. You made damn sure that your cat had very visible tags if you let them out of the house. Ashley sat on the window thats about as close to outside as she wanted to be.

crazy! It's good to know that in the process of counting stray cats, they get shots and what not.
thanks.

This is a group in Oregon who does this all of the time, counting and fixing the feral cats. Actually its been found that if the feral cat population is stable, no new cats will move into the territory. You can read more about it in the above link. :)

The shelter in Hillsboro gets so many strays that they end up putting down close to 80% of them.

Just today I was worried when I saw a cat, not even fully grown, and dark grey, try to cross 21st. I tried to walk across with them, but they were slow, so I just picked up this random cat and walked across the street with it, putting it down on the other side.

It had a collar with an address on it, so it wasn't a stray...I won't have outdoor kitties. All my cats have been indoor. It's just a plain fact that cats allowed to go outdoors, on average, die younger. This one was so young, and damn near the same color as the pavement!!
