I have conquered my friends list! Finally! *whew*

Okay, first some linky linkies:

The Ditty Bops are two cute girls singing. They do vaudeville as well, I believe. Best of all, they're doing their tour by bike!! But alas, it appears they're not coming to Portland anytime soon.

CBS Sunday did a piece on the SCA. He admittedly is wrong--I'd bet that most SCAdians aren't heavy fighters. But if you go to an event that's a war, and during the daytime, that's what you'll see; and since it's a war between two kingdoms (as opposed to, say, Autumn War, which is within one kingdom) it's a huge war. Other than that, it's a very balanced and fun piece that manages to keep us from looking like total idiots. *lol*

Last of the links: Blogging Reykjavik! Mostly photos, with comments. Rather dryly funny in places. I'm not sure if I've posted it before.

Okay, now on to my weekend report!!

Friday:

After work J met me at my parents' house, where with his help I made mushroom soup and pasta and strawberry shortcake with Oregon strawberries (I'm eating more of it right now!). Then he helped me clean my room up a bunch because I was frantic about the Vampire Masquerade ticket. He mostly took things I handed him and put them where I wanted them--trash vs. recycling. vs. a pile of books...when the pile in front of me would thin out he'd push more stuff in front of me, which was usually helpful and only rarely overwhelming. We took a break at one point to make a run to Craft Warehouse and buy beer, heh.

Oh, and the ticket was in the top drawer of my dresser, with a bunch of other mail. I could swear I'd already looked there. But my room got worked on a bunch, so I'm not complaining. I have carpet!! Yes!!

Saturday:

When we woke up us and [livejournal.com profile] jenhowell were hungry. She gave J money, he went to the store, and I made fake bacon, and bluberry and cornmeal pancakes that were closer to crepes but still damn good. The recipe was from one of the Sarah Kramer cookbooks and I'm sure I'll make it plenty more times when blueberries are in season--these were frozen.

J and I went to the Rhododendron Garden near Reed College. The ducks and squirrels there are used to being fed by people and are damn friendly, so I took far too many pictures of J interacting with the not-so-wildlife.

If you stood still long enough, they assumed you had food and started swarming towards you:

There was a lot of pretty shaded benches, and on two different ones, we read the first two chapters of Stardust.

When we got back, to get in the mood for my evening, we watched Bram Stoker's Dracula. Y'know, the one with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder and all that? OMG, it was the most amusingly horrible movie, ever. Plot-wise, nothing made sense. People did things for no apparent reason, the special effects were terrible. On the other hand, some of it was visually quite pretty--but then, it was a movie about vampires placed in 1897, so of course it'll be pretty. But, yeah, all I could think was that it would make for an excellent MST3K session.

I tried making fangs--we'd stopped at the Halloween store on Canyon Rd earlier--but the putty refused to harden. Ew. I mean, there were fangs, but they wouldn't stay on my teeth. Blargh. And every time I popped them on, the putty (still the color of toothpaste) came out the sides in a most unattractive manner. I also replaced the elastic on the mask I bought, with ribbon. I got some fun ribbon at Craft Warehouse--pink on one side, more of a fuschia/red on the other, with hints of each on the other side. Nice. Cheap, too.

I got all excited and anxious as I was getting dressed. J was a big help there, for sure. I didn't have any jewelry that was appropriate, so I tied the ribbon around my neck in a bow off to one side, with the ends hanging down. It worked out quite nicely. The borrowed dress fit great and J had fun lacing me up, my hair behaved (mostly), and the lipstick was fine. I was a damn happy camper, as far as how I looked. Except for the fangs. *lol*

J dropped me off at [livejournal.com profile] axiom and [livejournal.com profile] alicia_stardust's house but was asked to stay for a picture. I should've posed like I was gonna bite his neck or something, except the teeth would have fallen out.

Group shots!

You can't tell, but we're all wearing our fangs. All of us took them out after the pictures. Even the people who could get them to stay in, were talking with amusing lisps.

Goth Prom!

No, seriously. It was just like the goth prom, except with alcohol. There were tables on each side, everyone was dressed to the nines (including a girl in a total Gothic Lolita outfit, including that tiny hat at an angle, and I'm so jealous, and very glad I didn't wear my outfit, because hers was far better). At one point there was a couple of burlesque dancers. They were very good. I was on the floor when this was going on, and I remember that [livejournal.com profile] dragon_mintz was in the balcony, and I'd wished I could be next to her, because it would be more fun to watch it with someone else willing to squeal and giggle and ogle.

There was even a photographer!!

(Psssst...that's me.) *lol*

One big happy family...of vampires!!...sort of.

Who...me?

Anyway. We had to wait in line for over an hour for this guy. So I missed the repeat of the burlesque dancers, and the bellydance troupe. Booo. Next year we're getting in line, like, right away or something.

I saw so many pirates there. Seriously. Cardinal Sin was there (in a very dapper and non-clerical outfit), as was most of House Daos. I saw Cardinal Phil McGroin (who used to be on the Moca Sozhinia), and he was in full pirate regalia. I pulled of my mask, curtsied and introduced myself as Ann Virgynne of The Leo's Pride. "Oh!" he said loudly, "you're a COCK!" I responded that I most certainly was, and there was much giggling. I talked to an SCAdian (not with the pirates per se, but aware of them, and wearing a frock coat) who lived in Tacoma and who had legally changed his name to Cutter, after the ElfQuest character. We had a good time talking. There were lots of men in frock coats, but I didn't talk to most of them. Too busy dancing or whatever, y'see.

The advantage to having my own ride was that I stayed a wee bit after everyone else left. They played a Depeche Mode song, even; and I danced like crazy. I just wish I could have danced more!! I danced to stuff whether I recognized it or not, because I liked it all. I wore my mask when I was dancing alone, it made me feel mysterious, despite the fact that I was taking up lots of space and was, I believe, the only person there wearing pink!

Earlier in the evening when [livejournal.com profile] alicia_stardust and I were dancing, I kept asking her who it was with every song. *lol* Poor thing. But hey! I can totally recognize Sisters of Mercy songs, before the vocals start. They're...pretty distinctive. ;^)

When J came to pick me up I was still buzzing from dancing and having a good time but not enough of it, and I'd just had another drink (WTF did I do that for? I think I was hoping they'd keep playing music after they had to stop selling alcohol, but alas, alas...), so I wasn't ready to actually leave, and ended up sprawled out on the hood of his parked car, babbling on drunkenly, for a bit. He dealt with it all very, very well. :^)

Side note: I wore my contacts until after the pictures we took there. I took them out and realized I didn't have my glasses. I kinda panicked...I left my cell phone number with the door people and asked at both bars. When I was waiting for J after I called him, I got a call from [livejournal.com profile] axiom: I'd left them at his and [livejournal.com profile] alicia_stardust's place. *whew*

Sunday!

We were starving, so we went to the Paradox for a late breakfast and stuffed our faces. Then we went to Laurelhurst park and read some more Stardust. Squirrels are distracting--they like to chase each other and make cute noises. I couldn't see very well, I was sans glasses still. It kept giving me a headache. I'm glad I can read without them, at least.

At one point walking around between chapters we saw something over the horizon...was that a hula hoop? Sure enough it was--there's a group of people from tribe.net who do hula hooping, and I guess when the weather's nice they do it in Laurelhurst park. They had plenty of them just sitting out, so J and I hula hooped for a bit. Felt like being in the Yes You Canopy at the Oregon Country Fair. I gave my email to a woman there, I don't know if she'll respond to me. There are classes and everything! I can keep one going around my waist for ages, and walk slowly and turn around. I can get one going above me and change hands. I cannot, however, get one going around my waist and another around my hands, and I cannot make them move up or down, dammit. *lol*

I had coven ritual at [livejournal.com profile] 5minutelimit's house and got the glasses back. The ritual was good. And now [livejournal.com profile] jasperpdx has been sucked onto LJ. Ha!!

J picked me up and took me back to my parents', where we did some more work on my room, and then him and I and my parents went to Sweet Tomatoes (meh, not so great for vegan food really--although huge salads are always good). I came back with them and he left for home. Le sigh.

*whew* Wow. Hopefully I didn't forget anything or screw up any tags or something. I'm tired and it's time for bed!!

EDIT: Fixed one picture's size and added a bit about hula hoops. Okay. Now I'm done. I swear.

I love The Ditty Bops. They opened for Tori Amos last September. :)

What kind of fake bacon do you use? I've never been able to find anything good.

Also, the Ditty Bops :)
I found them on myspace. They're fun.

We didn't use the kind I like--which is Fakin' Bacon by Lightlife. To get it truly bacon-y, you have to fry it in lots of oil until the edges are crispy. Mmmm...that and Vegenaise and you can make yourself a vegan BLT. And a yummy one, at that.
