I'm almost near the end of Wuthering Heights. I have no freaking clue why so many people like it.

I feel silly doing this but I'm making a spoiler cut anyway...

Okay. No offense, but Heathcliff doesn't love Catherine. He's obsessed with her, sure. But I don't know of any kind of real love that would let you cause all of that person's relatives absolute misery for the entirety of the rest of their existance. He's just an asshole.

Catherine isn't much better. She's a selfish, self-obsessed, twit.

People rarely actually die of heartache. They seem to drop like flies in this novel. Gaaaah. Although the selfish invalid theme plus the surroundings kept reminding me of The Secret Garden, which is a favorite of mine.

I'm so tired I feel slightly ill. I've sucked at work every day. Even with my adderall and coffee, I've felt completely brain-dead. Every night I tell myself I'm going to get to bed on time, and every night I don't make it. Grrr.

This night. Yup. Honest.

Whenever I have caffeine I usually get a stomachache and the shakes and I get real anxious. So...I try to stay away from it as much as I can.

Dude, if you don't like WT, definitely don't read Tess of the Stinkin' Durbervilles (I saw your guys' literature community).

Over-dramatic characters and really lame female lead.

I'm much more of an Austen-Wharton-Cather girl when it comes to literature written by women. Even the ones with more tragic endings at least feature believable female characters not sucking.

However, I DO really love Madame Bovary, and Emma is really selfish. But it's just way better written.

I was a literature geek all through primary/high school. Now I'm catching up on all the fun stuff I missed like comic books. (:

I liked the PBS version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Comic books: Baby, I'm all about ElfQuest. Oh yeah.

I didn't like Wuthering Heights either. I did enjoy Jane Eyre written by a different Bronte :o).

I liked Wuthering Heights a LOT when I was in high school, but I'm open to admitting that it won't hold up to the test of maturing tastes. :)

And, admittedly, the reason I liked it so much wasn't because it was some tragic love story, but because I was very into obsession, both when it involved me and in theory. So, it was a good book for that time. Haven't read it in almost 5 years, though, but now I kind of want to just to see what I'd think now.

Heh, obsession is practically my middle name.

I mean, I really liked The Scarlet Letter, that was about obsession. Same with Endless Love, which I think came out in the seventies.

But Heathcliff was so mean!

I also have a rather large masochistic streak. It's shrinking, because James refuses to give in to it, but other people haven't been so...diligent.

I have a masochistic streak too, but I give myself nice safe outlets for it. Including fanfiction, heh.
