aprilstarchild: (Gir playing DDR)

The "Japanese food here at home" has somehow turned into a small party. The menus is: sushi, veg and non; tempura, veg and non; vegan miso soup. Lots of rice. Green tea, barley tea, possibly sake.

The background on my phone is now a picture of the DDR machine at Wunderland. This guy who works there was flirting with me. I kept thinking, he does not know how old I am, he looks 17!! He'd clocked out and we were playing DDR for a few rounds, and while I was playing Panic Park with [livejournal.com profile] ruby_wings, he dropped a stuffed M&M in front of me, told me to have a good night, and left. I asked one of the people working there how old he is, he's 20. I took the M&M, but I left him in a goofy spot in my mom's car, I'm waiting to see when she notices.

So, tomorrow: gay cowboys and Japanese food. Sounds like a good day to me. *lol*

Now, I go off in search of slash.

ahhh being flirted with is good times, no? it's finally starting to happen with me again since i'm ditching the whole "angry, depressed, mopey" thing.

i'm so freakin' outta shape that ddr makes me sweat like a pig now. this time last year i'd go for hours. glad i got a bike - means i'll start feeling better 'n stuff.

what's slash?

Slash: Fanfiction that contains a homosexual relationship that is not in the original material.

Aka: A story where Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy turn out to be gay and become lovers.

Or where Frodo and Sam do.

It's called slash because of the way pairings in stories are denoted: a story about Harry and Draco would be labeled Harry/Draco.

Slash was started in the Star Trek fandom, several decades ago, when fanfiction was still on memeographed newsletters. It's mostly written by women, often in their 20's. It varies from rather romantic stuff, to flat-out pornographic writing.

It sounds very odd, I suppose; but I love the stuff.

I have always used the term lemon to describe erotic fan fiction. I guess slash would be more specific to the character parring and lemon more to do with the erotic elements.

Its been a while since I thought about these things. I could be way off.

The term lemon is, as far as I know, only used in anime/manga fanfiction. No one uses it in the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter fandoms that I've seen.

Yaoi is another one only used in anime/manga.

I also have a friend who insists that any non-canon pairing (whether heterosexual or homosexual) is slash, but I don't know what fandom that would apply in. I've never seen it used that way.

I've seen the term "lemon" lots in the HP fandom, but it refers to a specific erotic scene or chapter. As in, "Sorry no lemons in this chapter, but they're coming soon!".

Slash, the way I've heard it used, only refers to pairings of gay males. There's "femmeslash" for two women, or "het" for male/female pairings, though I don't see that one very often anymore. And a "ship" is the particular pairing you like, short for "relationship". As in, April ships Harry/Draco, and I ship Snape/Hermione. Those are the most common fanfic terms I've seen used.

OTP is another one, as in One True Pairing, or the "ship" you read the most.

In LOTR I was fond of Sam/Rosie/Frodo, and people often called it their OT3. *lol* Unfortunately there wasn't enough good fics in that threesome, and very few that were both graphic and good. Pretty Good Year is a novella-length fic with that group that's very good, but rarely gets into the physicality of the relationship.

OTP is one that I've only ever seen in LJ icons. Heh.

How about BNA (Big Name Author) or BNF (Big Name Fan...as in, someone who comments/reviews a lot but doesn't write)? Do you have BNAs in H/D? :D

Ooh, and WIP is one that is the BANE of my existence. ;)

BNF is often used to mean authors as well, in hobbitslash and H/D. Anybody with just tons and tons of people on their friends list.... Cassandra Claire (aka [livejournal.com profile] epicyclical is a BNF, both in LOTR (she wrote The Very Secret Diaries) and HP. [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01 is a BNF but only in H/D circles.

Hobbitslash and H/D have a lot of crossover. When I first started heavily reading H/D, I kept finding people I used to know from hobbitslash. [livejournal.com profile] fictualities used to be a well-known Frodo/Sam author, for instance.
