isn't Harry usually the top, or do i have it backwards?

It depends. There are entire communities for both.

There are some filled with BDSM-ish stuff where whomever's top is very cruel. It's been my experience that usually Harry's the top in those. I'm guessing people just like to see Harry go nuts and/or be evil here and there, and having him torture Draco in a sexual manner is a nice revenge against the way Draco treated him in school.

There are also lots where Draco is flamingly gay and has known he's gay for quite some time, but Harry is just catching onto the idea that he might be gay. Often in a very clumsy if charming kind of fashion (emmagrant01's novel-length fics are an excellent example). It's more common in those stories that Draco's the top, mostly because he's the only one who knows what he's doing! But even then, not always. :^)

I think Draco being gay is very consistent with Canon. In fact, I'd be almost surprised if JKR didn't envision him as being in the closet by year 6. Boy has some serious issues, and many of them revolve around being what he thinks his father expects of him. Recipe for a closet, to be sure.

So any fic which involves draco coming out as an adult and spurning his old ways makes sense. His DE thing kind of reminds me of this guy I knew in college who was so terrified people would think he was gay that he would lie to people and tell them he was a hardcore Republican. He thought if people knew he was liberal, that they'd figure out he was gay. Draco seems to be in that kind of closet. The overcompensation closet. Plus - he's way more interested in Harry, crabbe, & Goyle than the girls.

With Harry... well, we know his inner thoughts, because the books are written from his perspective. And he's into girls. So those are a bit of a stretch for me. But maybe his uncertainty is just not addressed, kind of like Hermione's birthdays. But straight of gay, I think Harry's a top. And Draco is a bottom. he just strikes me as a bottom. Don't think I can explain why.
