At work we all have rows we're sorta in charge of. Doing filebacks, checking for misfiles, keeping it neatened up, that sort of thing. Some people have pictures of their kids under their names on the row ends. I put up an ad from People that shows a young fox and says, "He needs his fur more than you do: Choose compassion as your fashion."
A coworker, let's call her M, asked who put it up. I said it was mine, and she smiled and said she was anti-fur too. I overheard B saying, "But the animals are already dead..." Turned out she thought fur coats came from already dead animals. What, roadkill? I'm not sure. But M told her that they raise foxes and minks and rabbits specifically for fur. I pointed out that they're usually kept in small cages, and because most other methods damage the pelt, most of them are killed via electrocution--often using a rod stuck up their butt.
B's eyes got big, and she asked, "Isn't that against animal cruelty laws?"
Oh Holy Crap. I had to tell her that in the USA, pretty much none of those laws apply to any animals used for commercial purposes. I had to clarify that fur is a commercial purpose, as is any kind of meat or dairy or eggs. They also don't apply to animals used for any kind of experiments, but I forgot to say that.
