Sewing isn't as hard as I thought. I'll definitely have this done by Friday morning. Apparently my mom didn't realize how simple the pattern was.
I'm more than halfway done. The lining is sewn together, the outside is sewn together, the hood is done (lining and outside) and sewn to the outside part. I just finished pinning the lining to the outside. I have to sew all the way around except for the neck, flip it so it's right-side out, sew down those seams on the outside. Then I have to sew (near as I can tell, by hand--I don't think I'm that good with the machine) all those nasty seams at the neckline so they look nice and neat, and sew on the hook-and-eyes. Voila, a cape.
That neckline is gonna kill me. The actual pattern assumes you're using that shiny thin "lining" stuff for the lining. My lining is thicker than the outside part. Ha. Because, guess what, I actually want to be warm.
I'm glad I decided to just go with using thread the color of the outside part. The grey thread looks really neat on the inside edge of the lining.
This cape is going to be pretty dang warm. I think I'll spray it with Scotchguard too, just to make it extra water-resistant.
*is happy*
Admittedly, this pattern is labeled "very easy," and I have my mom's help, but I'm still pretty proud of myself. It's functional, it's pretty, it isn't taking me all that long and didn't cost me a lot of money.
Even sewing the shorter version of the pattern, it's a scant six inches from the ground on me.

Date: 2005-11-03 12:53 am (UTC)I've seen directions online for skirts just like the one I wore to Halloween. It's not technically complicated, but it's a lot of time and work--all that gathering!! Oy vey.
