I think I want to be an RN. This is likely to change at any time, of course; and I have a lot of time to think about it because it's going to take a bit to pay of PCC so I can go again, and I'll have to start damn near from the beginning because I don't have any of the science requirements.
I dunno. There's a few reasons for this. I have to admit, and I hate admitting it, that one very large reason is: I will never be unemployed. There is a nationwide shortage of RN's, and that doesn't look likely to change any time soon, even with more and more of the work going to MA's. (BTW, for those wondering: I really don't want to be an MA because their abilities are very limited, and they mostly do clerical work in reality, and there's no room for advancement.)
There are other reasons. I like the idea of helping people, duh.
I can do eighty thousand different things as an RN. Job variety, lots of choices, yay. Especially if I'm willing to get more education after my BSN.
I have the feeling that once I get over the idea of being around body fluids and/or upset and/or sick people, I would actually enjoy working in an ER. Yay, excitement!! ADDer's do well under pressure--helps us focus on what we're doing, and I definitely like jobs where I'm always dealing with whatever's directly in front of me. That would mean working really odd hours, though. "Urgent care" would not be nearly as exciting but would usually have weekday hours, depending on the clinic.
I could work in public health, with people who don't have health care. I could work at Planned Parenthood. Good lord.
Anyway. Off to fez now, yay!

Date: 2005-07-02 01:45 pm (UTC)My mother was always upset at folk who thought of nurses as failed doctors. She talked about the nurses job being to care for the whole patient while the doctor just treated the disease.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
