I did a little apartment-hunting today.
I really, really want to live alone. I can light incense, cook lots of garlic, put goofy stuff on the walls. Nobody's stuff in the fridge but mine, so no more "is that my rotting lettuce or hers?" and no worries about people eating my stuff (this doesn't happen with Nana but if I leave anything in the cupboard/fridge up the hill....this happened even when I wrote my name on every surface of a box of microwave popcorn). I can sit around in my undies when it's hot out and keep the heat level where I want it and listen to whatever I want and not worry about waking up someone if I get up early in the morning and make oatmeal.
The biggest, and it's a very big one, drawback: Cost. Sharing an apartment is always always cheaper. Especially when you know there's no way in hell you're dealing with dial-up internet again. *lol*
Hopefully no one is too disturbed by discussions of money.
I make $1100 a month after taxes. Around $140 of that goes to medications, and if I ever stop getting samples of Wellbutrin it'll jump up another fifty at least. It'll go down some when I stop taking antibiotics for my acne, but then; it'll probably go up when I run out of my current supply of birth control pills--I think at this point I make too much money for them to be free from Planned Parenthood.
If I live walking/biking distance from work I save $62 a month. But there are few options that close--the cheapest is St Mary's Woods, where a one-bedroom is $550.
There are studios in Rock Creek that are apparently $450 or less. But then: add the expense of a bus pass. It's not a bad complex, BUT! It's on the 52 line. It's a relatively frequent runner, but it's a good fifteen minute ride to the max. On the weekends it only runs every half hour, and on Sunday it stops running at 9pm--although I should be home by then anyway, to be in bed for work the next day.
Most of the apartment complexes along the actual max line are meant for people who work downtown. Most of them cost a lot. I stopped by two today that are right between where I work and a max station. Both of them have one-bedrooms that start at $650 or more. I need to check into the one at Willow Creek--it looks less expensive.
Gah. Half of my monthly income is $550, yes? So I'd like to keep my rent and utilities under that. Because I have medications. I have shit I'm paying off (even with nothing in collections, I'll owe $2,200 to Sallie Mae and about a thousand to PCC).
I might just look for another job. Bleh. I should see if OHSU is hiring. They pay for bus passes too, dangit.
Also: Looking into low-income buildings in Portland. Le sigh. I saw a "review" site about the building that a friend of mine used to live in. Pretty much all the reviews were negative, and along the lines of the complaints that Bink had in a different building--mostly, fire alarms going off all hours, and lots of tweakers. Bleh!!

Date: 2005-05-20 06:14 am (UTC)I can't remember the name of the one on Willow Creek, it's driving me crazy. I've googled every thing I can think of. Grrr.
I love my almost free bus pass
Date: 2005-05-19 07:31 pm (UTC)You might make more money here, but you would have prescription coverage. We like our employees medicated...

Date: 2005-05-20 06:29 am (UTC)The records office doesn't have windows to the outside, is dimly lit, and half the files are in the hallway. No.
I could already work in OHSU's lab if I had a year's worth of college-level science. Dammit! *lol* I'd make like $13/hr as well, in addition to all the other nifty stuff.
Seriously, if I worked at OHSU, I'd live in Portland, NW most likely, near Burnside. I could afford to live in NW by myself in a studio. I make $8.50 right now. An income increase that big, plus cutting my expenses for medications down to copays, plus discounted bus passes?? HEll fucking yes.
Another random note: OHSU employees get to take classes cheaper. Bwah ha ha ha ha !!
