This may be TMI, but just so you know?

UTI's are truly, no fun at all.

On the other hand, found out that 1. simple lab work doesn't require an office visit or a copay and can be done on my morning break with time to spare, 2. not having an allergy to sulfa drugs is a good thing, as my antibiotic was a whopping $7, 3. when I'm obviously truly ill, not only does my crappy lazy coworker offer to cover my unfinished work, but my crappy supervisor doesn't debate me when I ask to leave early:

"I have a UTI and I'm in a great deal of pain. May I leave early?"
"Yes."

Also, there's a nifty med that's OTC that is a gift from the gods, for Lo! My antibiotics won't truly kick in until tomorrow, and if I had to live in that much pain, I'd be considering various ways of ceasing conciousness for a short while. Also, I'm glad I had Cherie with me, as she was knew what the name of the drug was, and knew the prescription dose, so was able to tell me I could safely take twice the listed dosage. Which is good--because it still hurts but it's tolerable.

Also, most people seem unaware that most cranberry juice has added sugar or other juices blended in. No, I want plain, straight, cranberry juice. Not a juice cocktail. Just cranberry. I knew the brand and found it at New Seasons. I water it down a bit, but still: I'm glad I like tart things anyway.

Lesson learned: When I think to myself, Hm, I haven't been drinking enough water lately....that's the time to start obsessively drinking large quantities of water.

Goldenseal is also very helpful for uti's. It's fairly common as a combo with Echinacea. Instead of cranberry juice you might try getting fresh cranberries (weird food fact... cranberry juice is colored with the dye from a bug ... it's not naturally that red color) cook them in a pot of water with either oranges or apples as a sweetener for about 20 minutes and let cool. It's great on toast, or ice cream and is much much more concentrated than cranberry juice. Also don't forget that the antibiotics are going to mess up your other flora and fauna so you'll need to take probiotics of some sort.

I bought some soy yogurt, and I'll probably take some acidophilus pills as well.

As far as the cranberry juice, this stuff is just ....cranberry juice, and it's red. I know to look out for carmine--it's pretty common in grapefuit juice combos.

At the very least, lots of fresh yogurt with the good bactgeria in it! Antibiotics usually give me a yeast infection....another "not fun" thing!

Well, that's why I won't take Augmentin--instant yeast infection. Yucko.

Be careful with it though. Last time i took it, I took a second dose because it didn't work (it says you can) and I got an awful migraine, that wouldn't medicate away. Talked to my doctor, and sure enough, its a common side affect.
I take cranberry pills now if I'm feeling not quite right.

I didn't have any issues with it; but I didn't have to take a second dose either...

Well, I'd never heard of it until I spoke to Cherie. In any case, it's fantastic stuff. Advil doesn't do shit on that kind of pain.

straight blueberry juice w/o sugar helps too if you get sick of the cran. And I second the fresh yogurt!

Don't forget that your b/c pills won't work as well either because of the antibiotic.

Yeah, and I just started a pack of pills a week ago. I'm thinking about just stopping and getting a really early period and then starting a new pack on Sunday. Meh. Too lazy. *lol* I'll just keep on this pack and be super careful about my backup method, yeay.

Hi'a April,

I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. It's such a bummer to have to take medicine and deal with feeling crapy. I hope you feel better soon my friend! Also I'm a big supporter of the cran juice too. I find Camimille (oow I spelled that very wrong sorry)tea is really great too. It helps me relax. Can't remember if you said you were a tea drinker or not.

To switch gears to a totally different subject, although I guess it might make you feel better(:! I have a recipe you might like. I got it from one of hippy books I have and it makes a very yummy sounding VEGAN chocolate cake ^_^! The book says it is specifically a vegan chocolate cake, and it looks really simple. I haven't tried to make it yet myslef. But I will one of these days hopefully. If that sounds cool I could fine a way to get it to you. Maybe post it in my LJ or something to that affect. Well talk care my friend. Hope to see ya soon.

Hayley ^_^

I have a ton of vegan cookbooks, several with chocolate cake recipes. Haven't tried making the cake, but have made a half-recipe of the frosting for one and ate just the frosting, which is my favorite part.

I'm actually feeling tons better, thank gods.
