Lots to talk about today, but the finger I sliced yesterday hurts like hell so it's going to be short.

The Aurora voicing was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, and not stressful. It was a wonderful experience to realize I was in tune with the people around me. Joan, the director, whose last name is hard to spell; is great. Very enthusiastic--she obviously loves this. As I was saying to another newbie, she's going to push us hard and expect a lot but she'll encourage us every step of the way. Near as I can tell, anyway.

My range is better than I thought. The hymns we sing at church really throw me off--a lot of stuff is around middle C, and I sing either too low or too high and sound like crap. But she was having us sing stuff lower than that and I was doing fine!

In any case, I'm an "alto one alto." I'm on the higher range of alto for four-part harmony, and when we sing three-part I sing the lowest part. [livejournal.com profile] 5minutelimit, which are you?

I loved seeing how different all the women there were. Most of them had sung somewhere else before (even if it was junior high chorus) so I was in the minority there, oh well. One girl, who looked the youngest (very cute, but if she's a day over 19 I'd be shocked), oh my god. She had sung, apparently, every part at one point. I think she got put as a soprano two for starters with the caveat that she could change if she wanted. Boy, did she have pipes. Joan had us singing in pairs and threes and fours while listening, and when this girl hit the higher stuff, she deafened us all. Holy crap. Very strong clear voice.

One of the singers, I saw at the bus stop, and she had her two pet rats with her. They'd been in her sweater the whole time. I love rats, and these two were so adorable...

In any case, being in the chorus is a ridiculous ego boost. I've been convinced I can't carry a tune to save my life for years and years. I was teased by my friends in high school choir. A few years ago, I was at a Sisterspirit discussion group and I'd learned a song at Witchcamp that applied to the theme of discussion. With much encouragement I sang it, and Jennifer (who's probably the biggest reason I decided to play the harp) said my voice was just fine. It was a surprise to me that someone would think so! Especially after Chris was in Westview's Choir every year, which convinced me it wasn't just genetics as I had previously supposed, I've been thinking about singing...

And learning how to tune my harp convinced me I wasn't tone deaf, dammit. Or even close.

So, yeah, I'm really happy and I hope I can keep up with the rehearsals and practices. Even if I only ever do this one season (ha ha not likely), I'll be forever glad. I'll never be in opera, or a pop star, but goddamnit, I can sing!

Your eval of Joan is right on. Her parents had changed her name to "Simco" but she changed it back, which is awesome if difficult. We often make fun at people mispronouncing it especially at retreat.
DON"T MISS RETREAT. It is awesome, tough and fun.
