Aug. 2nd, 2007 01:26 pmI went ahead and did the Quick-Entry thing for Portland State, as I've decided to only take Chemistry this fall. I figure I should eeeease my way back into school.
In terror of the fact that CH104 requires MTH95 (which I did pass....four years ago) I bought a math review book at Powell's Technical Books. Whee for Algebra. The best part is that it has a plot. It's based in a loosely-structured fantasy world where you learn the Algebra along with the characters. Totally goofy, but if it works...
Last night myself and a coworker went to see the documentary Finding Normal, which is about the Recovery Mentor program. I don't work in that program directly, but my coworker used to, and I do take charts back and forth between them and the medical office.
The Recovery Mentor program pairs recovering addicts with drug and alcohol counselors who have themselves recovered from addictions. It's really awesome, because the counselors, obviously, have been there. So not only do they know what the people in recovery are going through, they also know when they're full of shit.
As one of the counselors put it to one of his clients, "I'm here because I give a fuck about you." The two counselors that they followed the most, both said that they love their jobs. As another put it, "The only thing better would be being a midwife...I feel like I've helped all of you be born."
My coworker and I sniffled and cried through, like, half of it. We also randomly poked each other and smiled when someone we knew was on camera, whether another coworker or a client. There's this scene at the end of a guy talking, he was in prison for years and did drugs for years, and he was at a park for the Fourth of July, watching fireworks, and talking about how strange it was to be in such a "normal" environment, how this was all new to him, and he'd never thought that he'd get to that point. His obvious joy at being there was so astouding.
Afterwards, my coworker and I talked about how proud we were to work where we do. I mean, we both are normally, but as the credits rolled I wanted to jump up and shout that "We both totally work there!!" because I was just so proud.
Anyway. Mustn't get got posting at work.
