Random Thought o'the Day
May. 8th, 2007 06:15 amI'm actually regretting tossing something when I sorted through my stuff: my old Earth First! Journals from around the time I was tree-sitting etc. Some of the articles are laughable now. For a while it looked like people were getting away with various forms of sabotage and property destruction, but it turns out the FBI etc. were just biding their time--I'm pretty sure everyone from the truly news-worthy actions were caught, like the arson at Vail, and some of the "midnight gardening" raids on GM research facilities. But while it seemed like people were getting away with it, more and more people were trying it and/or writing about it. (For the record, I never participated in any of that stuff--I think of tree-sitting as a nonviolent form of direct action, just getting in people's way.)
I remember one had an article written by Julia Butterfly while she was still in Luna, and still identifying her tree-sit as an Earth First! action. There were lots of articles on various tree-sits and other forest defense actions. When I was in the tree-sit, I would read entire issues front to back.
And then there was the letters section. It was called "Dear Shit-For-Brains" and sometimes shortened to Dear SFB. Every issue (Earth First! Journal came out eight times a year on the pagan Sabbats) there was begging and pleading for people to keep their SFB's short for publication. Some of the letters were well-written and thought out, some were just awful.
But one issue had my favorite "please keep your letters short" headline ever: "Like spores on the wind, your long SFB's create wood rot," and underneath were little drawings of mushrooms. I don't know why, but way back in the day, I thought it was the funniest thing ever. When I spotted it while sorting through my boxes, I laughed all over again.
I don't have any pictures from that time in my life (except one! of me with green hair) so it's weird to have nothing physical to remind me of what that period of time was like, or more accurately, what that period of time felt like.
Eeek! Must jump in shower. Today's the day I get to be a lab rato
