Oct. 18th, 2006 05:03 pm1. So remember how I posted about Richard Dawkins a few days ago? I watched his BBC special, and had a dream about him?
I'm poking through the Willamette Week, and it turns out he's coming to town. On October 27th, to Powell's, to promote the book The God Delusion. Needless to say, I now plan to buy the book and be at the signing with Jarrod. Whether or not I tell Richard Dawkins that I dreamed about him, though; is up in the air. ;^)
2. Observations on bike commuting:
I'm glad I used to drive a car. I know what cars are likely to do. And hello, don't pass me only to go the exact same speed I am, in such a way that I'm in your blind spot. I know where your blind spot is, and it gives me the willies, especially when there's a possibility of you turning. Also, look before pulling out into traffic. Look again.
There is no such thing as a flat road. The only exception I've found, is the chunk of the Hawthorne bridge that goes up. Everything else is uphill or downhill. Even Ladd's Addition, although it's very slight. Yes, I'm in third gear both ways, but going towards Portland is easy, and coming home is hard work. And even the slightest of inclines gets tiring after a while.
I sit up on my bike. Any wind, at all, turns me into a freaking sail. Last week it was windy on Monday, in my face, and I went over most of the bridge in first gear. I almost never ride in first gear. I wasn't the only one, either--lots of people on bikes were just crawling along.
My thighs are getting very muscular. Go me.
3. I got the best compliment the other day from
jenhowell. I told her I'd miss part of her thing on Saturday because Jarrod wanted us to go to a thing for a coworker of his for a short period of time (a woman's retiring from National Guard...she's going to burn the paperwork!). We won't be there all day, we're not going to miss much of the thing here.
jenhowell's response was, "You can't miss my party! You're worth three people!" Apparently I just liven up a party, three peoples' worth. :^)
