Sep. 8th, 2005 10:59 pmNot touching my friends list tonight. I swear. As it is, I'll get less than six hours of sleep. Eep!
So, I got my sheet music today at my first rehearsal of this term for Aurora Chorus. Was flipping through it before we started and Lo, There Was A Mighty Squee, for one of the songs we're singing is "May It Be" from Fellowship of the Ring. Y'know, that Enya song?
*boing*

*boing*
Enya has quite the range, which doesn't really work for choruses, so the melody is split between sections, and for the first bit, the altos get it. Bwah ha ha ha!!
In any case, I told the woman to my left how thrilled I was and we chatted a bit. Joan spent all night going through the music with us, one song at a time, with Joan explaining how the songs are arranged thematically, why she picked certain arrangements/pieces (including hers), yadda yadda. We did "May It Be" last, of course. The woman next to me grinned and whispered, "You've been waiting for this all night!"
So we're going through it, sight-reading here and there (ha ha ha I already know the tune) and she points to the lines "Mornie utulie" and "Mornie alantie" (sorry, don't know how to do the accent marks) and says "There's a bit of Celtic in here..." and my arm shoots up, but she's not looking, so I shout, "It's Elvish!!"
Joan: What?
Me: It's Elvish! (a few people pipe up along with me, "Yeah, it's Elvish...")
Joan: *confused* Elvis??
Me: No, Elvish! What elves speak!!
There's a good giggle in the chorus, and Joan says something along the lines of "knowing who the Lord of the Rings fans are in this chorus" and then something like "I guess we'll be singing in Elfen" which of course was mildly irritating, but only because I'm geeky enough to know that Tolkien never calls it Elfish or Elven or Elfen. It's always Elvish.
We're singing lots of other yummy music too, of course. Very little of which is even close to being Christmas-y. There's a Solstice song, and a song in Hebrew quoting the Psalms. We're singing part of the Ode To Joy, but with German lyrics by Schiller most people don't know, translated on my sheet music thusly:
Joy, beautiful spark of Gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter, fire-drunk,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.
Thy magic powers re-unite
What custom's sword has divided
Beggars become Princes' brothers
Where thy gentle wing abides.
Be embraced, millions!
This kiss to the entire world!
--we also sing the last verse of the English lyrics most people know. German seems to be the thing this term, as we're also singing one completely in German called "Hebe deine Augen" ("Lift Thine Eyes"), which is by Mendelssohn. A few gospel songs (my brother Chris recognized one of the composers, no less), a Latin chant-type song (sho pretty), and the title song for the night, "Peace Like a River", which I've sung in church, but certainly not the same arrangement! Yikes. Joan is the Queen of Random Time and Key Signature Changes. Yup.
Off to take a shower and go to bed. Whew.
We get the CD's of June's performance next week, grrr. Oh well.
EDIT: But first! Important dates!! For those of you who have to ask for dates off etc.
Concert dates: December 17 and 18, both at Catlin Gabel school. Don't know the times, I'm guessing evening-ish.
My retreat is December 3 and 4. The weekend before
dragon_mintz's birthday. Suckage.
