aprilstarchild: (At Long Beach WA with dragon_mintz)
Odd realization of the day: I have four icons that have pictures of myself in them. In only one can you see my face, and even then only half of it. Hm. I'm not as fond of that picture as I used to be, either. I want one where you can see how much godforsaken hair I have, sheesh.

So! Yesterday:

We went to the September Birthdays Party at The Funny Farm (aka where I used to live out in the boonies). [livejournal.com profile] dragon_mintz got to meet a bunch of my crazy-ass friends, which went really well, even if she did get kinda embarrassed when one of them stopped the conversation long enough to tell [livejournal.com profile] dragon_mintz that she was really pretty and then all eight of the people in the room turned to look. *lol* Poor thing.

She also got to see the oddity that is Katamari Damacy. Bwah ha ha. And now I have the soundtrack on CD again, but I'm positive I left it in her car. D'oh.

I got some really good pictures but haven't loaded them up yet, that'll happen later this week. No, seriously, I promise. They're on the computer at her apartment, I just didn't get around to it. I got some funny shots, like one of Gwen in her Pimp Hat. There's also some pictures of boffer fighting, yay.

We had to leave relatively early to run home and get ready for FireJam. I got all kinds of nervous-excited before showing up, because I knew that a few pirates I knew and a bunch of my EG friends were going to be there. I spent a lot of time running around telling EG people, "That's my captain, and that's Frederick the Reckless, and that's Athir...." Speaking of Athir, he got a girlfriend and apparently they're doing the monogamy thing. *le sigh* Oh well. I mostly saw him at events anyway, and not only am I not planning on going to anymore this season, when I do start going again, there's a good chance I'll have [livejournal.com profile] dragon_mintz with me, and my tent doesn't fit three people that comfortably anyway, if-you-know-what-I-mean.

Lots of fun fire stuff, and yes I have pictures that will go up later this week.

The rest of my night/this morning was all kinds of fun. Yup. *ahem*

Unfortunate realization of the week: I actually like diet Red Bull. It's expensive. It's more caffeine than I'm used to. I drank one yesterday afternoon and took my Adderall with it. That was....fun. buzz buzz buzzz..... Now I'm going to start keeping these in the fridge at home, I just know it.

Gah. I get today as a paid day off, but next weekend I only get Sunday off. My office is switching filing systems (thank the gods) but we need a day when we're not doing anything else to set it up. So of course they make it the same week as Labor Day, so they don't have to pay overtime. I'll still get a six-day for a five-day workweek, so it's not all bad. *shrug*

I *heart* this icon. I think it's not only because the picture itself is so nifty, but because now I have an icon that's a picture of [livejournal.com profile] dragon_mintz and myself that isn't nauseatingly mushy to most people. *lol* Apparently I don't like PDA's even in my own LJ.

Nummers!!

Quinoa and Kale and Mushroom Stuff:

Half cup uncooked quinoa--I used red quinoa just on a whim, it looks really pretty
One bunch young kale
Two cloves garlic, more or less depending on your personal love affair or lack thereof with garlic
Two cups shiitake mushrooms
A few tbsps olive oil
Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
Tamari, Shoyu, or soy sauce--whichever you have on hand

De-stem the shiitakes and dice small. Mince or press the garlic and cook it on low with the oil for a few minutes, stirring often, don't let it brown. Add the mushrooms and put on the lid. Stir every few minutes. Meanwhile, rinse and de-stem the kale and slice halfway down each leaf and then in quarter-inch slices width-wise.

When the mushrooms are reduced and have put out a bit of water, add the kale. Stir relatively frequently until the kale is cooked--you might want to taste a bit of it here and there, some people like their kale mushier or firmer than others. .

Meanwhile (don't I love that word?) rinse the quinoa--if you don't rinse that stuff it sure as hell is nasty. Boil a tad less than a cup of water, add the half-cup rinsed quinoa, and cook for around fifteen minutes. Little white rings will cook and pop off the quinoa, which is kinda neato. Normal quinoa (not red) when cooked, looks like itsy-bitsy rolled up condoms, it's so freaky.

When the kale is done, add a tiny amount of vinegar (I think I used a little less than a quarter tsp) or lemon juice, it makes it taste so much better. Also add shoyu etc. to taste (half to one tsp).

Mix up the cooked quinoa and the kale stuff. Makes about two servings, very tasty.

Quinoa is a whole grain that doesn't taste like one--it's light-tasting, but it's got lots of fiber and has a good amount of complete protein. Kale has iron and calcium. Supposedly shiitakes are good for your immune system.

This dish made me crave orange juice. Which isn't a bad thing, because Vitamin C helps you absorb iron.
