So I decide to go downtown to return my library books. They're overdue by about a week, and I want something to read. I wrestle with my books, discman, and purse once I get on the max, settling my purse against the wall to my right and the books on the seat to my left.

I get off at the library stop downtown.....and realize, as the max is pulling away, that I am missing my purse. I have my books, and my discman, but I am sans purse. Enter the panic zone. I run down to the pioneer square stop, but the max pulls away before I get there. Now what? I don't have any money to get home, and no bus pass. I see a Radio Cab and run up to it. "Can you catch up with that Max? I can't pay you unless we catch up to it, 'cause I left my purse in it and it has my card." He accepts, I jump in, and we race the max for a few stops. We catch up, I run on and grab my purse, which is still there. The second I get off, I start rummaging through for my wallet. I dump it out right there on the pavement--everything but the wallet. I immediately start to wail. A guy walking by (who, unfortunately, I did not get a good look at) tells me that he saw two black girls take my wallet. In retrospect, HE probably did--otherwise, why didn't he stop them? I run back to the cab and between sobs tell him that my wallet isn't there. I'm totally panicking at this point. He gives me fifty cents and we drive to a hotel which, unlike that max stop, has a working pay phone. I call my parents and tell them what happened and that I have no way to pay the cab's fare. They tell me to go ahead and take the cab home and they'll pay it. I come back and tell the driver, he drives me all the way home making small talk. The fare adds up to $30 and my mom tips him five and thanks him effusively. I mean, really, he didn't HAVE to take me to the max knowing full well I didn't have my money with me, and he didn't have to drive me to the burbs not sure that he would be paid there either except on my word. So YEAY for....the cab company. I was so panicky I don't even remember the name of the taxicab company.

I called the credit card company and canceled the card. There was only $3 in cash in there. I called Portland Police but they said to call back in the morning to make the report. I'm mostly worried about all the ID. My driver's license, social security card, school ID, both library cards, it's ALL in there. It's a pain in the total ass to replace all that stuff. There's also numerous other cards--my body shop discount card, my bus pass, punch cards to lots of different places....oh, I don't remember. Just A Lot of cards. It was a nice wallet, too.

Keep the damn three bucks. Just give me back my ID!!!

I wouldn't call it an adventure so much as an ordeal. :-P
