unspun wool can be felted pretty easily, but I'm a big fan of knitting it up and then felting it, the results are a little more controllable.

You should probably learn with a drop spindle first, it's way way easier. Drop spindles are pretty cheap (NW Fiber Arts sells them at the riverside shopping center thingie, for five dollars on up), or there's a way of making them yourself with a dowel and a couple of old CD's (google is your friend).

Drop spindles are great because they're very portable and cheap and much easier, especially to start (I have yet to use a wheel, myself). Also, spinning wheels weren't in Europe until the 1200's (and even then, only the rich owned them), so when you use a drop spindle you truly appreciate why even very wealthy people only had a couple changes of clothes!
