Jan. 19th, 2010 07:51 pmEvery time I ponder making big decisions about my future, especially when they're about my very near future, I have a dream something like the one I had last night, where I'm driving a car but there's something wrong with the brakes and steering, or maybe I've just completely forgotten how to drive, and I'm not sure if I'm lost or not, and what the hell is wrong with the roads anyway? Why can't I get back on the Hawthorne bridge back to my house? What bridge is this?
What's interesting is how, whenever I have these kinds of dreams in the last few years, I'm in a dream version of downtown or inner eastside Portland. Half the roads have disintegrated to where it's dangerous to walk or drive on them (maybe they're big gaping holes). Or I'm on a freeway into or out of downtown and I'm going the wrong way, dammit, but I can't figure out how to get off this freeway and turn around. Or I'm taking the bus and I'm at a bus stop but can't figure out when the next bus is coming, or where it's going, and I don't even know what part of town I'm in.
So this is where I'm at: I'm going to apply for full-time status and financial aid for school this fall. I'm thinking of catching up on math on my own and taking MTH111 either over the summer or this fall. It's not required for pre-nursing, but it is required for 200-level chemistry, the prerequisite for 200-level biology. Because yes, I've done two terms of 100-level, which is all you really need for pre-nursing, but y'know what? I think I'd like to do all my pre-nursing classes with the expectation that I will be at PSU until I finish a degree. Because I don't see myself leaving Portland to go to nursing school, and it's many times harder to get into nursing school if you're staying in town. So I may as well finish an actual degree while I'm waiting, and why not do a general studies Bachelor of Science? I like science, and I'm pretty damn sure I have the brains for it.
Also, taking higher-level biology means I increase my chances of getting A's in anatomy and physiology, which at PSU is a 300-level class you're taking with the pre-meds. And there's no damn point in applying to nursing schools if you don't have A's in A&P.
Last but not least: OHSU has a program for people with a Bachelor's in anything and all their nursing prereqs done, where you get your BSN (Bachelor's of Science in Nursing) and your master's in psychiatric nursing in three years. They take less people than in the general nursing school, but less people apply; the ratio of applied to accepted is much better than applying for the usual BSN program.
So, in the meantime: I still need a job, because my unemployment won't last until September. I have no idea what to even look for, at this point. Cashier jobs? Try my hand at waitressing? Go back to working medical records (bleh)? See if I can get a nanny job?
And there's other changes coming up in the next year. Still up in the air though. Will update later....maybe.
I have, quite possibly, up to seven years of school ahead of me. All of which will be on loans. Oh lord. Someone shoot me.
Do I really want to do this?
I know I don't want to work shitty low-skilled low-paid jobs the rest of my life.
