Dec. 9th, 2009 10:52 pmDefinition of PMS dinner:
A whole bag of edamame with bragg's on it
Sauerkraut (with carrots and beets) out of the jar
Beer
People's stopped carrying my favorite brand of sauerkraut!! I guess that's another reason to start making it myself.
Got a belated birthday card with a check for $100 in it. Woo! Because I had to exhaust my benefits a couple weeks ago I've been short, so the timing is just about perfect.
Put a CD I bought last year into my iTunes: Kitka's Wintersongs. Kitka is a women's choral group from Oakland that mostly does songs from Eastern Europe. There's only two recognizable tunes on the album: Alilo, which I sang with Aurora last year (which is why I have the album) and Carol of the Bells done in Ukrainian.
*poking around Wikipedia* Oh wow! Carol of the Bells was originally in Ukrainian! The main tune (the repeating four notes) apparently goes back to pre-Christian times. Here's a recording of the original Ukrainian version, although not the whole thing, and not Kitka.
Carol of the Bells has been my favorite Christmas carol for a long time--probably since I was part of a smaller group in third grade that played the main melody on those tiny school xylophones (we called them bells!) with the music teacher playing the rest on piano, for a holiday pageant at Camp Allen Elementary. There were eight of us in the group, and I remember that I had a velveteen dress and that my mom put hairspray on my bangs and curled them with an iron.
ETA for those not on facebook: Shawn and I are gonna be outta town for New Years'! We'll have different yurts for each of two nights at Nehalem Bay. We've been there before, but we were in the hiker/biker campsite, not the yurts. The bay isn't all that exciting but the beach is beautiful. We're taking the bus both ways. Here's hoping Manzanita (a short ride from the campground) isn't completely dead in the winter!
