Right of way

It's a fact: More bikes are on the road. To minimize accidents, drivers need to be aware of them and act safely. Some tips:

Give them space: Recognize that bicycles have a right to the road and may legally take the full lane. Allow at least 3 feet of space while passing.

Respect their speed: Do not underestimate how fast some cyclists are moving. In many circumstances, a bike can travel as fast as a car. Never turn in front of a bicycle, even if you think it's traveling slowly.

When in doubt, wait: If you can't allow the bike 3 feet of space, wait to pass until you can -- just as you would for any other slow-moving vehicle.

Be patient: Do not honk or yell at bicyclists. You could startle them or cause them to veer.

Be careful when opening your car door: When parked along roadways, look for bicyclists before opening your door, as a cyclist may be hugging the side of the road, right in the line of your car door. Open your car door into a rider's path and you may cause a serious accident.

Look for bikes: Keep an eye out for cyclists, and always look both ways before exiting a driveway or intersection.

OMG 30 WTF

I shoulda posted this ages ago. C'est la vie.

I'm turning thirty on November 8th and want to celebrate on Friday, November sixth! There will be a low-key party at The Kitten Shack from 8pm to about ten, at which point we'll ride to the Fez (across the street from Powell's on W. Burnside) for their weekly Shut Up and Dance night. Feel free to show up to either or both!

Please note that The Fez has a cover charge of $5.

MORE DETAILS:

1. The Kitten Shack is 5825 NE 11th Ave, between NE Killingsworth and NE Ainsworth. (There is a pink and black mini-bike in front of it.)
2. I'm going to make Skittles vodka and have 7Up or something similar, and probably some sweet and salty snacks. If you want anything else to drink, bring it. Something (vegan) to eat would be lovely too. Keep in mind though, we'll only be at the Kitten Shack for a couple of hours.
3. Some people have told me they're not sure if they're coming to the Fez. To that I say: You should come to the Fez. The music is awesome and there will be dancing, although you don't have to dance.
4. If you'd like to come to the Fez but can't afford the cover charge, get in touch with me. I probably can't buy you drinks though.
