SO MANY CYCLISTS
Jun. 19th, 2009 12:41 pmPedalpalooza is becoming a victim of its own success.
The pre-party for the naked ride ended up having to take donations to cover costs afterward (they're in the black now, thank goodness) as things ended up being three times as expensive as planned. By the end of the night, Lily was lying on the floor and muttering, "We're never doing this again."
The taco ride had 106 people show up.
Shawn's mid-week ride to the Gorge had 46 people--he was expecting about 15--and they got kicked off the max by a surly max driver (who had already let them ride for several stops) who said something like, "You're the reason people hate cyclists." (Details here.)
Last night's ride was fun. It was called Portlandia Obscuria, Dekum to Woodstock. Carl and Shawn rode an old tandem (that alone was worth showing up), we did a meandering route from NE Dekum St to SE Woodstock, and as we passed each street, Carl would tell us (through a megaphone) the origin of the street's name. Many of them were named after developers and bankers from the late 1800's (or their wives) but there were a few tugboat operators, senators, trees, and in one case a notary public.
After hanging out in Woodstock Park for a bit, some of us went back to Carl's house to get Shawn and Carl's bikes, and I got to ride with Shawn on the tandem. Riding a tandem is hard, but kinda fun. I think with some practice we wouldn't be half bad at it, but it's unnerving to ride in the back, where you have no access to brakes.
The Bowie Vs. Prince ride is tonight. I have an 80's-ish outfit planned. And I can stay out all damn night this time. FUCK YES. Shawn and
jenhowell might finally get to meet.
I didn't get the job at the women's clinic. C'est la vie.
