So my landlord, Jim, has decided that the rats can't live in his house anymore.
I clean their cage once a week, emptying the bedding and washing their hammocks and hosing off the cages outside, but you can't ever get the smell completely out. It wasn't a huge deal in the summertime, we all had the windows open all the time. But now that it's getting colder and we all have the windows closed most of the time, apparently the smell is going into other rooms--the house is older and not even close to airtight (for instance, the heating vents for my room and the bathroom are on the same duct so when the heater's not on air goes between them, and there's a place in the kitchen were you can see through to the basement under the baseboards).
I personally don't think it smells all that strongly, even after being away all day and coming home. Not to mention that it always smells worse when I'm in the process of cleaning the cages--although I open my door to the outside and then point my fan out the window and turn it on high and leave it that way until a bit after I'm done.
So today Jim sat me down and asked me to find them another place to live. He didn't give me a time limit but said he trusted me to figure something out in a reasonable time. I stayed calm while talking with him but I was really upset. I offered to clean the cages more often, but his mind is set on them leaving.
Jarrod was over at my house at the time, and I asked him if he'd take them for a while. He said today was just as good as any other day, so after some arguing over logistics, we got the rats and their cages and supplies in his car and brought them over. They're set up in the upstairs hallway at the moment. The agreement is that I come over a few times a week to keep their cage clean, and that I have to take care of their supplies--food, Carefresh, etc. Jarrod will make sure they have food and water on a daily basis.
I'm not giving them away, in case you're wondering, not to strangers in any case. I'm going to move, probably by the end of December. I don't like where I live that much anymore anyway.
On the positive side,
underthethrow has mentioned wanting rats, and now she'll get a chance to interact with them.
Where I lived was on the upper range of my rent budget anyway. I bet I can find someplace less expensive.
