Aug. 24th, 2007 12:44 pmFirst thing: This month's Movie Mystery Ride is going to show Nausicaa: Valley of the Winds, which is by the same guy who did Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, and whose name escapes me at the moment. It's not this Friday but next one and is totally free.
So I brought home two rats from the rescue. One has pink eyes (really pale pink eyes, I swear you can see through them) and one has black eyes, and they both have dumbo ears and curly whiskers and fur that feels like a freshly shorn sheep. They both have rather bald spots over much of their body, I'm not sure if it's from fighting or barbering (something rats sometimes do when stressed out). They're growing back in, thankfully.
I was puzzled by what to name them...I thought of Pinky and The Brain but that makes them crazy and/or stupid and/or megalomaniacal. Rosie came to mind for the pink-eyed, following in the hobbit-name-theme, but a Rosie would have to be outgoing and gregarious, and the pink-eyed is neither.
I've settled on Pinky and Bluebell. I could not stop calling the pink-eyed Pinky unintentionally, so why not? Katrina told me there's a pair of paintings usually displayed together called Pinky and Blue Boy, and it seemed like a satisfactory combo.
Bluebell is friendly. She's also quite the rodentist--the first time I picked her up she just tried to climb into my mouth. *lol*
Pinky is super-shy. The second night I had her she let me pick her up, and I carefully cleaned off her tail with a damp washcloth. She didn't fight it, but I think she was just terrified. After I was done I just kinda pet her and sang a little and baby-talked her, and she started bruxing like mad and then boggling! None of my other rats have boggled at me yet. I felt all special...but now she's not really letting me pick her up. I think Pinky is almost completely blind--I've seen her walk into things. She can see shadows, I know. When I put my hand in her cage she tries to nibble all my fingers, one after the other. It's so funny: "This one's not food, maybe this one? Nope. This one? Nope..." *lol*
The other rats are just fascinated. I haven't really let them meet yet--I'm thinking of having them all run around in the bathroom tomorrow because it's neutral ground and they can't get too far or into anything. But the "hobbit" girls are just constantly trying to get to the new ones, sniffing and sniffing like mad. They sniff my fingers if I've been touching the new ones. They're quite interested in them. I just hope they get along...I'm not sure, yet, if I'm going to just get a two-rat cage for the new one, or save up and buy one big enough for six rats. I suppose it depends on how their first meetings go.
Katrina and I finally started attempting to do music together last night. She's about as good on her violin as I am these days on my harp. We're also both used to playing in completely different keys, yikes. So we're going to tackle "Southwind" and a very slow version of "The Irish Washerwoman." Woo!
So helloooo to everyone and no, I didn't fall off the Earth. :^)
