ExpandBitching about work time! Yeay! )

I had my first meeting with the Board of Mission and Outreach at church last night. I feel all spiffy. It's so nice to have my ideas and suggestions taken seriously. I also have two tasks: One, I need to call St. Vincent de Paul and ask what services they offer and how people are supposed to access them. Two, I'm in charge of a fundraising thingie. Our denomination does a specific fundraiser with an assload of other denominations nationally, and the money goes to various aid (not missionary) projects around the world. Three, I volunteered to be the one going up during service and report on what the board is doing/has done/is going to do. Normally this is only a minute or two, but in April I have five minutes because we'll be bringing up all the budgetary stuff from last year. Yeay for yearly stewardship drives.

One of the biggest reasons I joined this church is because of all the community service stuff it does. Joining the board, holy crap, we do more than I thought. We've had to make some hard decisions because money is thin right now. There used to be a small fund set aside, and when people called the church saying, "I need help with rent/electricity/prescriptions," one of the members of the board would call them back and check out the situation and offer a bit of money. It truly wasn't much, around $60 a month was budgeted for this, and we gave the money directly to the landlord/electric company/pharmacy. Apparently it sucked to be on the rotation, because either you'd find people trying to fuck you over, or you'd run out quick and have to turn people down. What we've decided to do instead, is make a list of larger organizations who do that sort of thing, and have that ready for people; and give the money there instead. Which is why I'm calling St. Vincent de Paul. I also stressed to them--if they literally show up at our door, we should let them use the phone, and we should have bus tickets to give them.

We give out $5 vouchers to a local grocery store. We have brown bag lunches for people who show up hungry. We're heavily involved in Family Bridge, which gives temporary shelter to homeless families (there are churches on rotation, we take turns--about every nine weeks we have families for four nights), and we give money to the day house for Family Bridge that gives them breakfast and lunch and has classes on things like renting and interviewing skills. The day house has a full time director and a part time volunteer coordinator, as well--the church gives them $100 a month. The board doesn't do this, but the church also started a program that on Sunday nights opens the church up to homeless kids (there are more homeless people in Hillsboro than most people think). We're in the process of building a shower downstairs, so they'll get a chance to use it. We're also having a movie and dinner. It's not an overnighter, just an evening thing--but it's a taste of "normal" for them. The idea actually came from the high school group--they're awesome.

*whew* Between being on the church board (there are other boards, but I'm only on the one) and Aurora, I think I don't have time for anything else that requires me to be anywhere at a specific time. I may rent a harp and I may keep knitting but I can fit those in whenever I get a chance.

Which will be, like, never.

Okay, after this I'm going to bed. I'm goddamn tired. I've been averaging 6.5 hours of sleep a night, and I even have a mild cold. Post-nasal drip blows, btw.

I'm so behind on my friends list I've sort of given up. I'm going directly to the lj's of people I know in person and am curious about their recent lives, and the rest will just sit. When I have time, I'll go back to reading all of my flist.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] mechalith:

Post a song that...

01. Reminds you of an ex-lover: Oh, this could be a loooong list. Anything by Guster, Man or Astroman?, or the Barenaked Ladies.

02. Reminds you of an ex-friend: *blink* I can't think of anything...

03. Reminds you of your childhood: Anything by Yes, Rush, or Styx. This would be early childhood.

04. Makes you cry: Gentle Arms of Eden, recorded by Aurora Chorus

05. Makes you laugh: lots of Heather Alexander? Hm.

06. Makes you wanna dance: Damn near anything. Right now, Franz Ferdinand

07. Reminds you of the one you love: Portions of the soundtrack to Katamari Damacy (yes, the video game). Also, the theme song to Invader Zim. That is the awesomest theme song ever, btw.

08. Makes you very, very sleepy: anything by Enya

09. You wish you wrote: A good portion of Radiohead, but in particular Where I End and You Begin. Also Bjork: especially I Miss You, and Isobel

10. You wish had been written for you: Both of the above. Also Radiohead's There There

11. Reminds you of yourself: Oooh, the same three songs again.

12. You never want to hear again: the vast majority of the z100 playlist. Anything that was on heavy rotation on the muzak at Fred Meyer.

13. You want to get married to: She Moved Through the Fair, even though it's sad

14. You want played at your funeral: When I was in high school, I thought it would be No Rain by Blind Melon (man, that song still gets me). That, or I Can See Clearly Now.

15. Makes you want to mosh/slam dance: wouldn't that hurt?

16. Sums up your teenage years: No Rain, Blind Melon. Not necessarily the lyrics. Video, maybe. The tune.

17. You used to hate but now love: stuff from DDR. Especially Kick the Can.

18. You like to wake up to: *snarl* Leave me alone in the mornings.

19. You like out of your parent's record collection: Yes, The Fragile (esp. the song Roundabout)

20. Your parents like out of your collection: Anything my dad likes of my music, he buys for himself...he likes Bjork in small quantities. My mom thinks we're both nuts.

21. You love that you wouldn't know about if it wasn't for a friend: I'm sure there's a ton, but none come to mind. If you really and truly stretch the meaning of the word "friend" you could say anything and everything by Radiohead.

22. Makes you think of someone who died: I've never had anyone close to me die.

23. You love the video more than the tune: Been a while since I was watchin' them video things.

24. Reminds you of your first crush: *giggle* I cannot think of a song that reminds me of Odinn Svannson aka Erik Millard (and right now [livejournal.com profile] silverrose79 is giggling too)

25. You love which is from one of your favorite movies: A bunch of Beatles' songs from A Hard Day's Night.

26. Makes you think of the moon: Enya, some of the stuff from Shepherd Moons, how predictable.

27. Makes you think of sex: Closer by NIN.

28. Makes you think of being alone: The rest of the NIN album Closer is on. *lol* Also, most of OK Computer by Radiohead. And Fiona Apple's stuff, especially the song off her first album that starts "days like this I don't know what to do with myself, all day, and all night..."

29. You love to hear at clubs: Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand

30. Makes you think deeply: anything by Fiona Apple
