(no subject)

My friends are into naming their houses. Usually with shared houses. Ends up being convenient to refer to a house by name when three or four of your friends live there.

The Kitten Shack: the first one I knew of, so-called because the local outdoor cats loved their yard, IIRC.

Madison Mansion: it was on SE Madison.

Chris's Wayward Home for Boys and Girls: Chris owns the house and rents out the bedrooms to an ever-changing bunch of friends.

Little Pink: There's a building downtown that's a bank headquarters, and it's frequently called Big Pink because it's, well, big...and pink. Little Pink is also pink but just a house.

The Crow's Nest: The guy who owns the house just really likes crows. Poor guy made the mistake of ordering a custom messenger bag with a crow on it...just as that Portlandia sketch about "put a bird on it" came out. Oops.

So when I knew that [livejournal.com profile] pearlzenith and Kate were moving in, I wanted to name the place. I tossed around a bunch of variations that included the word "fangirl" in it somewhere, but on a silly whim a few nights after they moved in, we decided on Casa de Fancy Pants instead. We even started a tumblr.

I still want to get you guys a brass 221B plaque for the door...

I can't believe you left out the Holgate House! Not that it's a terribly creative name, but you know... We even had a room with a name, which I will not mention to avoid triggering anyone or sounding like an asshole.

I knew I'd forget at least one!

(I've delivered mail to it a few times now, BTW.)

Ahahahaha I had to think about what room you meant. Didn't Nicole name it that?

[identity profile] jenhowell.livejournal.com 2013-09-24 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Me or Nicole - I'm not sure which one of us. I definitely was the one who inspired the name either way, because I was always nervous about the unlockable ground floor windows...

I lived in the basement of a place where 4 people intermarried. They dubbed the place "greyhaven." guess what book series they were a fan of?

There's Monster Palace, too...

I lived in a house called Dwarf Fortress for a while. I was the tallest of the inhabitants at 5'4".

[identity profile] glowing-fish.livejournal.com 2013-09-24 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I am thinking I have been to that one!

[identity profile] glowing-fish.livejournal.com 2013-09-24 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually haven't named my house yet, until [livejournal.com profile] qousqous and his wife came to visit. I figured I needed to Portland it up, so I think I am going to call it "The Quiet House".

And we can't forget this one!

[identity profile] alaindan.livejournal.com 2013-09-24 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be surprised. :) how long ago? I've been dating one of the residents for the last 3 or so years.

[identity profile] glowing-fish.livejournal.com 2013-09-24 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that on 39th? Somewhere around Division?

Used to be 39th and Ainsworth, but they bought a house a couple years ago and now are near Prescott and MLK.

I wanna know!

[identity profile] smartasskicker.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Someday I'm going to buy a Victorian house and paint it green.

GREEN GABLES, MOTHERFUCKERS.

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
you know we'd proudly put it up.

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
iirc we called it the rape room. Because it was on the ground floor, so if your windows were open in the night....

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing Tolkien, let me know if I'm wrong!

[identity profile] smartasskicker.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
HA! I totally guessed that in my head.

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I almost listed this one, even though I've never been in it!

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I APPROVE

[identity profile] blackdwarv.livejournal.com 2013-09-25 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Come to think of it... I don't believe that I ever have been in a named house. Save for Fancy Pants, that is.

As a kid, we had a clubhouse/fort/hollowed out blackberry bramble that we called Falconshurst (Yes, I had been reading Swiss Family...)

[identity profile] glowing-fish.livejournal.com 2013-09-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have only been by it. Its on 39th.

[identity profile] hermi.livejournal.com 2013-09-29 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I lived in a house name The Pineapple Palace. It was very yellow inside.
