Rides so far:
Friday:
Hot Sock Ride: Went from Eastbank Esplanade to Sock Dreams (where they had a goofy game for us) and then to the Sock it To Me warehouse (more goofy games). Then rode to--
Bowie Vs. Prince: Admittedly not the same without Lily leading it. Had fun, although for a while it seemed like it was just a ride from one convenience store to another, even if we did swamp each place buying beer. My bell broke when my bike fell over once. Having your bell break the first ride of Pedalpalooza is a real bummer. And it was a nifty bell, too, that Shawn gave me.
Midnight Mystery Ride: Ended underneath the I-205 where the Springwater path meets it. Neato site in some ways, but lacking good places to pee, and very very dark, which makes it hard to find people. Shawn and I gloated over other people complaining how far away it was--for us it was less than three miles, and on the I-205 bike path to boot.
Saturday: Didn't do any rides. I did ride to Trader Joe's and back though. Which is about four or five miles each way, and uphill for a good portion of the way back, loaded down with groceries. So there.
Sunday:
Sacred Harp Singing ride: Sacred Harp aka Shape-Note Singing is an old American style of singing. I can't do it justice, so if you're curious, look it up! It's other-worldly. Also, much harder than I expected. On the upside, the Altoes are often somewhat of a drone, which is fun. I didn't warm up properly or anything, so when we were done I was starting to get hoarse. Then again, that might be because it's almost all sung forte. But, yeah: We rode around, sang in a few different places, went to Pix Pattiserie, then to the Sunday singing at a local church (it's in a different location each week).
Sunset Mystery Ride: Yesterday is when I, once again, learned that during Pedalpalooza, one should always assume that they won't get home until late in the evening. I have my bike-bucket loaded with warm clothes and beer, but I assumed (HA) that I'd be going home between rides...nope. Shawn and I stopped at Next Adventure before the ride so I could get some warm socks, and later I had to get lights from the Community Cycling Center, since mine were at home. The ride itself was lovely, if a bit cold--it ended on Marine Drive, and after the sun went down it became chilly in a hurry! But Shawn and I had a tailwind all the way home!
Oh, and on the Sunset ride, my front wheel started making this horrible sound. At first I thought: my brakes are rubbing. I disengaged the front brake: still noisy. WTF. I was so worried--I can't afford a new wheel or a hub overhaul. All the shops have long waiting lists on repairs right now anyway. Am I going to be stuck on the old Raleigh?! Should I dig up the wheel from my old mixte and put that on?! ....I take it to the shop six miles from my house, just to see what's going on....it was a twist-tie. One I put on myself, for the cycle-computer. It had turned around on part of the fork and was rubbing. I was a tad embarrassed, I must admit. C'est la vie.
And before I left today, I took the New Belgium bicycle bell off the Raleigh and put it on the Miyata. Partially because Pedalpalooza is WAY more fun with a bell, partially because I'm going on an Audible Signal ride tonight (by law, you have to signal when you pass cyclists or pedestrians...a bell works, so does yelling "On your left!", but the bell is louder and usually works better). I forgot that the bell dings constantly. Every time there's an itty-bitty bump in the road, the bell quiety (or loudly) dings. Better than no bell at all!! After the Audible Signal ride is a bike symphony on Mt. Tabor. We're performing some avant-garde music piece that requires 111 bicycles.
And today I packed a couple snacks for myself before leaving the house. I feel pretty spiffy. And I have extra clothes to keep me warm. And I still have beer. Yay!
AND: So far, since Thursday night, I have ridden 80-something miles.

Date: 2010-06-14 11:34 pm (UTC)Also, with Familial stuff, I've only managed to get out for one day of riding. I just keep loading the calendar and looking at it forlornly.

Date: 2010-06-15 04:48 am (UTC)I can't believe I've been missing rides, but it's been awkward since my manthing's rear wheel is in bad shape. It's so out of true it's not funny, and he's afraid it might taco (or fly off) at any moment. (Should he just buy a new rear wheel, since the repair queues are probably horrible atm?)
anyway, hi :D

Date: 2010-06-16 11:20 pm (UTC)Can't you go on rides without him? Shawn and I go on different rides/ride without each other all the time.
AND: Ahem. You still have some socks of mine.

Date: 2010-06-17 02:01 am (UTC)I do stuff without him most of the time, but I thought I would take him with me on at least one ride, since he's never done Pedalpalooza stuff since he moved here. I'm probably doing the Pride ride and WNBR for sure, but I'm so out of shape it's ridiculous...
